Letter from the Chair

Dear Alumni and Friends,
As the new chair of the department of Art and Art History I write to introduce myself and to extend to Cathy Levesque our deep gratitude for all of her hard work guiding the department over the past three years.
As a studio artist I teach the sculpture curriculum ranging from a freshman seminar in bronze casting to a collaboratively taught class that looks at the intersection of art and science.
This year I am delighted to welcome four new colleagues to our department: John Lee, painting; David Campbell, two-dimensional design; Eliot Dudik photography and gallery coordinator, and Michael Draeger, studio art technician.
Our faculty continues to exhibit and conduct extraordinary research around the world. Please refer to our faculty notes and news page to see the latest work and achievements from our department.
I am thrilled to announce we are building a new photography program and I invite all of you to be a part of this new venture. To herald the program, Eliot Dudik is curating an exhibition with photographers from around the world, "Breaking Ground: Contemporary Photography at the College of William & Mary." Constructing a program like photography from scratch is an intimidating challenge that will stretch our resources and our energies, but it is also and extraordinarily exciting opportunity. (See our website or contact the department directly for ways you can help.) Please join us at homecoming to celebrate this inaugural event!
Please join us to celebrate our past achievements, too, all of you, as we embrace our new challenges building exciting new programs and opportunities for our students.
I look forward to meeting and working with all of you over the next few years.

All best wishes,
Elizabeth Mead
Chair, Department of Art and Art History
