Year 4 Home or Host Students

Your HOME university is the one to which you applied and where you complete your first year.

Your HOST university is where you spend your second year.

Are you attending W&M as an international student? Yes, you will need a J-1 or F-1 visa to study at W&M. 

Are you attending W&M as an in-state or out-of-state student currently residing in the United States? No, you do not need a student visa to study at William & Mary. 

More information on your eligibility and visa requirements is available through the Reves Center. U.S. visa related matters pertaining to study at William & Mary are handled by the Office of International Students, Scholars & Programs (ISSP), while U.K. visa concerns for study at St Andrews are handled by the Global Office BA (International Honours) personnel.

Yes, First & Second year students are required to live on campus.

There are lots of different options when it comes to on-campus housing, from traditional dorms to apartment style. Third & Fourth Years are not required to live on campus, however, they do maintain guaranteed housing (accommodation) as a part of the JDP. This means that if you want to live on campus at William & Mary or St Andrews, as long as you submit your housing application, you are guaranteed to get campus housing!

While at W&M, registration will be very similar to that of a full-time William & Mary student, plus a few perks! Registration dates vary by student level (social class), but as a Joint Degree student you will be able to pre-register for any major required classes ahead of your assigned registration and cart building window. This will be coordinated by your academic major advisor within the JDP ahead of each semester!

W&M undergraduate students will register for classes using PATH. This system allows students to build their cart with their preferred classes and schedule. You can also search for classes and explore all the courses on offer for the upcoming academic year. 

There are usually two registration windows before each semester, each followed by an add/drop period where students can make live changes to their schedules and be accepted from waitlists.

First Year and Second Year Host Students are required to attend advising meetings before they can register for classes. 

At St Andrews, registration (advising) does looks a little different. One main difference is that course selection for both the Spring and Fall semesters happens together. First Year St Andrews Home and Second Year St Andrews Host (WM Home) JDP students will virtually meet with the St Andrews JDP Director to select their classes for the year during Fresher's Week (Orientation). In the Spring, Third & Fourth year students in the programme will rank the classes offered within their major for the next year. Honours students (Third & Fourth Years) will later attend an advising appointment with their major advisor ahead of the Fall semester to review the courses they have been registered for based on their selections in the Spring and make any changes. You will pay programme tuition/fees to your home institution for all four years.

W&M home students will receive a bill every semester. You will pay housing/accommodation fees (including deposits) to the institution at which you are studying that year. Whether you are a home or a host student, while at W&M you can set up your Banner account so that any W&M billing notices are sent directly to your parent, guardian, or other responsible party.

Yes! Due to the nature of the program's requirements and demands, double majoring is not possible, therefore, minors are highly sought after by Joint Degree students. Students may pursue only one minor while at William & Mary.

Students typically declare a minor in the third or fourth year of study, however, careful planning is required and it is recommended to begin thinking about them before reaching Honours (upperclass) status.

You should consult with an advisor in the department or program of the minor you wish to pursue. Courses taken at St Andrews may be used toward minor requirements. Students may count only two courses in common for the major and the minor (for example, a student pursuing an English major and a Film Studies minor may count only two courses with the ENGL prefix toward the minor).

Student leadership at W&M comes in lots of different shapes and sizes. Student life is bursting with clubs, sporting organizations, volunteering opportunities, and so much more. Being a part of the JDP, no matter what year you are in, does not hinder your opportunities to get involved on-campus and with recognized student organizations at W&M.

Some ways to get involved with student leadership on campus are:

• Get involved with the Office of Student Leadership Development! They offer a wide range of initiatives, programs, workshops, and events committed to helping connect students to additional opportunities throughout campus that meet similar goals.  There are a multitude of programs, mentorship opportunities, and events available to students through various campus partners and departments.
• Become an Orientation Aide! A part of STEP, our spirited OAs and OADs are a vital part of the Orientation experience at W&M. No matter if you're attending W&M or St Andrews, being an OA provides a great way to stay connected with the W&M community and welcome new members to the Tribe -- and to the JDP.
• Join a Recognized Student Organization! RSOs are one of the primary means of student involvement at W&M. There are over 500 RSOs at William & Mary ranging from sports to academics and countless other niche interests that can be found among the W&M community! Not a club for you? Well you can also create your own! There are endless opportunities for leadership and involvement!
• Participate in Fraternity and Sorority Life! Also known as Greek life, FSL is a vital part of student leadership on campus. Promoting values like scholarship, service, brotherhood/sisterhood and leadership, FSL cultivates yet another example of the many ways to get involved!
• Represent and advocate for the interests of the William & Mary student body as a part of Student Assembly! The university's student government organization and student union, Student Assembly represents every social class and graduate school. Managing the budget for students and student organizations, ensuring that campus policies remain fair, advocating for student rights, or establishing a student presence in both the City of Williamsburg and William & Mary administration are just a few of the many initiatives that fall under the purview of the Student Assembly.

Yes! As a student of both William & Mary and St Andrews, you will have access to a wide range of resources. While at St Andrews, you can access online resources like Swem's Collections or set up appointments with the Career Center for advising!
