Sustainable Programs Highlight - 4.11.22 at 6pm
W&M and UVA are co-hosting a virtual event highlighting programs that focus on topics related to sustainability and climate change such as sustainable development, biodiversity, and climate sciences. Watch the event here or read more about our Fall 2021 session in the Flat Hat.
Panelists for this year's event:
- Rowan Lockwood, PhD, Professor and Chair of Geology at William & Mary. Rowan Lockwood is chair of geology at William & Mary, where she joined the faculty in 2001. Lockwood is an internationally recognized paleobiologist who uses data from fossil records to predict how modern marine animals will respond to future environmental changes, including global warming. She has published in numerous leading journals including Science and Nature. Recently, Lockwood became a pioneer in the burgeoning field of conservation paleobiology, using information on fossil organisms to restore endangered ecosystems.
- Robert Rose, PhD, Executive Director of the Institute for Integrative Conservation and Director of the Center for Geospatial Analysis at William & Mary. Robert Rose has over 15 years of global conservation, project development, and management and team leadership experience. He also served as the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Assistant Director of Conservation Support for nearly a decade and is well-versed in strengthening the conservation of landscapes and seascapes around the world. International Flight EmissionsEmissions produced as a result of air travel are considered Scope 3 emissions by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol for W&M. Scope 3 emissions are the indirect result of business and can be claimed as Scope 1 (direct result emissions) by another company, in the case, the airline. Carbon emissions per international trip can be reduced by booking direct flights or as few connecting flights as possible. If traveling on an excursion while abroad, use public transportation such as train or bus whenever possible. Travelers have a few options for flights that have no other travel alternative. Research airlines which have already made changes to reduce the amount of emissions through technological advances and book only in economy class. Carbon offsets can also be purchased to help offset the emissions produced by the flight. These offsets are usually a fraction of the total flight cost (typical roundtrip offset will cost: Barcelona $20, to London $18, to Beijing $34, to Sydney $37). |
