Year of Civic Leadership The Year of Civic Leadership celebrates William & Mary's enduring commitment to service, public stewardship and leadership in service of the common good. The yearlong initiative invites the W&M community to engage through events, explore resources and tell stories that highlight civic leadership across campus, in our communities and around the world.
Yule Log Celebration Each year in December, the student body fills into the Wren Courtyard where festive “cressets” (wood-burning torches) warm the crowd. The students are treated to live festive music and singing, student reflections on themes of peace, joy and gratitude, and the reading of a special story by the university president. Afterward, students pile into the Great Hall to toss ceremonial sprigs of holly into the Yule log fire for good luck. Then it’s hot cider and sugar cookies for everybody.
