NIAHD Certificate Program

Earn the NIAHD certificate in Material Culture & Public History by completing three NIAHD core courses and four electives.

The three NIAHD core classes are:

  • Public History (History 409) OR Public History in the 21st Century (History 411)
  • Architectural Field School (History 406) OR Material Culture Field School (History 407) OR Archaeological Field Methods (Anthropology 225)
  • NIAHD Internship in Public History (History 408)

The four elective classes can be NIAHD classes or classes in other departments and programs--including Africana Studies, Government, Art History, Anthropology, Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, American Studies, Religion, Theater, English, Asian & Pacific Islander American Studies, and Film & Media Studies--that include aspects of American history and culture, public history, museum studies, or material culture.  See the NIAHD Course Offerings for a list of NIAHD classes offered each semester.

Students can use classes taken as part of NIAHD’s Pre-College Program in American History or the St. Andrews Joint Degree Programme to fulfill the requirements for the NIAHD certificate.  Also, students may also use coursework completed at William & Mary before they joined the NIAHD program to satisfy requirements.

You may find it helpful to download this fillable checklist to plan and track your certificate progress.
