Full Description
A group of William & Mary students and their professor are working to preserve
the stories of Black women from a bygone era.
Jennifer Putzi, an English and gender, sexuality and women’s studies professor, is leading a project
that is transcribing personal diaries by late 19th and early 20th century Black women. There are 10
diaries from both eras being digitized and preserved.
The Black Women’s Diaries Project, which started in spring 2024, enrolls up to 10 students in Putzi’s
digital humanities lab per semester. About 20 students have participated across three semesters so
far, each getting course credit or money for their work, she said.
