2024 Faculty Award for Graduate Student Mentoring
Together with the Graduate Student Association, the Office of Graduate Studies is pleased to recognize the 2024 winner of the Faculty Award for Graduate Student Mentoring. This award is intended to recognize faculty who serve as exemplary mentors to graduate students in Arts & Sciences. Denys Poshyvanyk, Chancellor Professor of Computer Science, was chosen for this honor based on six strong letters of nomination from graduate students.

Dr. Poshyvanyk’s advisees describe him as a forward-thinking, exceptional mentor who instills high ethical standards and encourages excellence in his students. His students tout his ability to cultivate leadership and teamwork skills, ensuring they have opportunities well-matched to their individual career goals. His advisees also express gratitude that he maintains a diverse and inclusive research environment that helps foster independent and innovative academic thinking.Dr. Poshyvanyk helps his advisees to leverage strengths while addressing any weaknesses with professionalism and clear communication. Several students noted the robust scholarly opportunities in publishing and conference presentation that he has afforded them, noting he “transcends the role of a mere advisor.”
For the many ways in which he serves as a role model for graduate mentorship, it is fitting that Professor Poshyvanyk be recognized with the 2024 Faculty Award for Graduate Student Mentoring.
