Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Caio Davison is the instructor of the William & Mary Gamelan Ensemble. His first exposure to gamelan music was as a child living in Indonesia, where he was able to attend Javanese and Balinese performances. Later, Caio began studying gamelan here at William & Mary, and assumed leadership of the ensemble following the previous instructor's retirement. As such, he arranged and conducted the music for the W&M Theater Department's production of Sitayana as its musical director.
He graduated with a degree in Physics in 2017, and earned a Master's degree in Physics from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2023. In Richmond, he joined the Gamelan Raga Kusuma ensemble, where he has collaborated with several guest artists, including renowned vocalist Peni Candra Rini, who will be visiting William & Mary to instruct and perform alongside the students. In the Gamelan Raga Kusuma, where he currently serves as its vice president, he has been able to perform a wider variety of gamelan styles, to include Javanese Pelog tuning and Balinese Semar Pegulingan. Caio just finished an intensive three-week gamelan study in Central Java and Bali, working with distinguished artists and instructors.
His passion for gamelan rekindled an interest in language learning. Besides his native English and Portuguese, he has relearned Indonesian and is still working on his Greek and French. Caio also enjoys mountain biking, cooking, and chess.
