Wayla Chambo

Biography

Wayla Chambo is a flutist, music educator, and broadcaster. She is passionate about sharing classical music with everyone, and seeks to break down barriers and help people to connect, with the music and with each other. As a performer, Chambo is committed to presenting engaging interpretations of both new music for flute and the traditional repertoire. She performs with guitarist Todd Holcomb as Duo Thalassa, serves as a substitute flutist with the Virginia Symphony, and freelances throughout Southeast Virginia. She has served on the Flute Society of Washington’s Board of Directors, the National Flute Association’s New Music Advisory Committee, and the Hampton Roads Flute Faire’s Advisory Board, and was Program Chair of the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention.

As a music educator, Chambo helps students of all backgrounds to expand and refine their skills, widen their perspectives, and find their own paths within music and the wider world. Her past teaching experience includes Virginia Peninsula Community College, Eastern Mennonite University, and the University of North Texas, as well as teaching students of all ages and levels in a private flute studio setting.

Complementing her performance and teaching activity, Chambo has also worked in public broadcasting since 2014. She is currently the Program Director for WHRO-FM, WHRO Public Media’s 24-hour classical radio station serving Southeast Virginia and beyond, and hosts the daily Afternoon Classics program.

Chambo is originally from North Carolina and has made her home in Hampton Roads since 2013. She holds degrees from the University of North Texas (Doctor of Musical Arts), CalArts (Master of Fine Arts), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Bachelor of Music).
