French Language Placement
General guidelines for placement in FREN courses:
If you have never taken a French language class before, FREN 101 is the course for you. If you have already taken French in high school but do not have results from a standardized exam (AP, SAT II, IB, CLEP exam) you must take our placement exam which is available on Blackboard through the link below. If instead you have taken a standardized exam and done well, DegreeWorks will tell you where you have been placed and if you have been granted FREN credit for past work. For example if you get a 4 on the French AP exam, DegreeWorks will probably tell you to enroll in either FREN 210 or FREN 212 (taught at the same level). If you receive a 5 on the AP exam, we generally recommend that you start with FREN 305 or a freshman seminar (FREN 100 or FREN 150 taught in French). Always feel free to contact our Academic Advisor if you have questions about the best class for you or if PATH does not let you enroll in the course of your choice. Sometimes students need an instructor override.
Note: the placement test is not directly linked to your fulfillment of the foreign language proficiency requirement. The Registrar's office will decide if you have fulfilled that college-wide requirement on the basis of your high school and college transcript. Our placement test simply tells you what course to take next. For information about course expectations check out these FAQ.
