Department of Mathematics Culture & Values
Supporting an Academic Culture of Excellence and Success in the CurriculumThe Department of Mathematics is dedicated to cultivating an academic environment of excellence, open inquiry and student success. Our curriculum spans the full range of the discipline, from introductory courses in calculus, linear algebra and differential equations to advanced offerings in algebra, analysis, geometry, probability and statistics, computational mathematics, mathematical biology, and operations research. This breadth ensures that students can engage deeply with both theoretical and applied perspectives, while the structure of the curriculum emphasizes the development of logical reasoning, problem solving, and creative inquiry. In upper-level courses, students move beyond routine exercises to tackle open-ended problems, participate in research-inspired projects, and present their work in seminars or conferences, promoting intellectual independence and critical engagement. We are equally committed to fostering the success of all students, majors and minors. Faculty employ inclusive teaching practices and active learning strategies, and mentoring opportunities are embedded throughout the program to support diverse pathways into mathematics. Students benefit from a strong advising system, research experiences and opportunities to collaborate with faculty, peers and interdisciplinary partners. Outside the classroom, our department supports a vibrant student community. Student organizations and the Mathematics Club host problem-solving sessions, career panels and outreach events that build community and introduce students to professional opportunities in education, industry and research. Engagement with professional societies, internships and community-based projects further connects students’ mathematical training to real-world applications. Our colloquium series and invited talks reflect a commitment to excellence and diversity of perspectives, exposing students to current research and a broad range of voices in the mathematical sciences. Through these combined efforts—rigorous academics, inclusive practices, mentoring and community engagement—we equip students with the skills, support and networks needed to succeed in their studies and beyond. |
Supporting the Success of All StudentsThe Department of Mathematics is deeply committed to supporting the success of all students, including majors, minors and those who engage with mathematics as part of their broader studies. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and pursue diverse academic and professional goals, and we strive to provide the resources, mentoring and opportunities that enable each of them to thrive. Our advising system pairs students with faculty mentors who guide them through course selection, research opportunities and post-graduation planning. Many students participate in undergraduate research projects, summer REUs or faculty-led seminars that develop independent thinking and prepare them for graduate study or professional careers. Graduates of our programs pursue a wide range of outcomes, including positions in education, data science, finance, technology, actuarial science and academic research. We foster a vibrant student community through clubs and organizations such as the Mathematics Club, and student chapters of national professional societies. These groups sponsor problem-solving sessions, career workshops, outreach events and peer mentoring that build a sense of belonging while broadening students’ perspectives on mathematics. Professional development is supported through internships, connections to industry partners and faculty-organized career panels. Students also engage with the wider community by tutoring in local schools and participating in outreach events that encourage diverse participation in STEM. Such experiences reinforce the social value of mathematics and help students develop communication and leadership skills alongside technical expertise. By integrating rigorous coursework, inclusive mentoring, vibrant student communities and engagement with both professional and civic opportunities, the Department of Mathematics ensures that all students have the tools, networks and confidence to succeed. Our goal is to nurture not only mathematical proficiency, but also curiosity, resilience, and pathways to rewarding futures. |
Supporting the Success of Faculty and StaffThe Department of Mathematics is committed to supporting the professional growth and success of our faculty and staff by fostering an environment of collaboration, recognition and continuous development. Our faculty and staff represent diverse areas of expertise, and we work actively to provide the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in their roles. Faculty success is supported through strong encouragement of research, teaching innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. We host regular colloquium series and seminars, which not only enrich our students but also give faculty opportunities to share research and connect with peers across subfields. Junior faculty are paired with senior mentors, who provide guidance on teaching, research agendas, and professional development. We also support faculty in applying for external grants and fellowships, presenting at national and international conferences and publishing in leading journals. Staff success is equally valued, with opportunities for professional development through university-sponsored training, and workshops. Staff are integral to the smooth functioning of the department, and their contributions are recognized through annual evaluations and inclusion in departmental decision-making processes. We foster an environment in which staff feel valued, supported and connected to the academic mission. Both faculty and staff are encouraged to engage with the broader community through outreach initiatives and partnerships with local schools and organizations. These activities strengthen professional identities while amplifying the department’s impact beyond campus. Through these efforts--mentorship, professional development, recognition, and community engagement--the Department of Mathematics sustains an environment where faculty and staff can excel individually and collectively, ensuring a culture of shared success. |
