The Craig and Nancy Canning Asian History Award

Established in 2021 by Professor Craig N. Canning, Professor of East Asian History at William and Mary (1973-2012) and his wife Nancy, the Canning Award supports undergraduate and graduate students in History who study and/or research Asia, with a strong preference for East Asia.  Professor Canning (Ph.D. in Chinese History, Stanford University, 1975) pioneered in the establishment at William and Mary of courses on East Asian civilization, modern Chinese history, modern Japanese history, Chinese and Japanese literature in translation, and the Chinese and Japanese languages.  Nancy earned a B.A. in Chinese language from Barnard College, Columbia University, and an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Stanford University.  Through many years of living, studying, and teaching in Taiwan, Japan, Mainland China and Hong Kong, Craig and Nancy gained an appreciation of the value of directly engaging the East Asian cultures they were studying.
