Juneteenth at William & Mary

Professor Adrienne Petty of the Department of History explains the significance of the Juneteenth commemoration of the end of slavery, when June 19, 1865 saw the announcement by Major General Granger in Galveston, Texas that slavery was over. Professor Petty places Juneteenth in the context of emancipation celebrations in the West Indies, Brazil, and Cuba.
