Current Research: late eighteenth-century American newspapers and urban community

Bio

Katherine (Kate) Madison received her B.A. from Carleton College in 2011, graduating summa cum laude with a major in history and a minor in Spanish.  Her senior thesis, entitled "News from America: Extracts and Trans-Atlantic British Community in London, 1773-1776," examined the intersection of print culture and imperial identity in the Revolutionary era.  Her M.A. thesis, tentatively entitled "The Schoolteacher and the Secretary: The Newspapers and Community of a Revolutionary French-American, 1754-1784," traces the interaction between one individual, his (three) urban communities, and the communities' various newspapers.  With this project, Kate hopes to illustrate questions of print culture and community participation/performance.  Her research interests include the social and cultural history of late eighteenth-century America, the Anglo-American imperial relationship, and the history of the book.
