Sigma Gamma Epsilon at W&M

The National Honor Society for the Earth Sciences

Purpose

Important Announcement: The William & Mary chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon is currently dormant. If you are interested in becoming an officer, please email [[ldmors, Linda Morse]].

Every semester, a few hundred W&M students take one of the introductory geology classes and its associated lab. Our primary activity involves offering tutoring sessions to these intro students, in order to help them work through problem sets, study for exams, or even identify the common rocks and minerals.

We tutor over zoom on Sunday evenings from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday evenings from 7-8 p.m. during the school year.

We are also closely tied with the W&M geology club, which organizes events to further build the sense of community that permeates the geology department.

Joining

In order to join the society of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, a few requirements must be met. They are:

Completion of 10 or more semester hours in geoscience courses
Maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA in those courses
Maintaining an overall GPA of at least 2.67

Members of Sigma Gamma Epsilon are encouraged to submit articles to the Society’s professional journal, The Compass, as it provides the opportunity to share your research with the society.
As an associated society of the Geological Society of America, Sigma Gamma Epsilon members are entitled to GSA-member rates for registration at national and regional meetings and for purchase of GSA publications.
