The Flora of Virginia Project

The Flora of Virginia Project is a long-term initiative to create both a manual and a website serving as comprehensive resources for botanists studying Virginia’s plants. In 2012, after years of dedicated work, the print edition of theFlora of Virginia was published.

According to the project’s website, its goals are to provide a guide to the identification, habitat, status, and distribution of Virginia’s plants for both professionals and amateurs; build on Virginia’s rich tradition of botanical exploration; incorporate current genetic insights alongside traditional taxonomy; and encourage appreciation and conservation of the state’s flora.

Botanists affiliated with the College of William & Mary’s herbarium have supported the Flora of Virginia Project—and the Atlas of Virginia Project—since their inception. WILLI Curator Emeritus Donna Ware serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors of The Foundation of the Flora of Virginia Project, Inc.

Researchers working on the project have made extensive use of the William & Mary herbarium collection and have consulted with its staff regarding taxa distribution and the list of included species. WILLI is proud to support this important work and to celebrate the publication of the Flora of Virginia.
