How to Declare a Studio Art Major

Studio Art majors study 2-D and 3-D techniques for creating their own works.

Step 1: What If? Degree Evaluation

If you plan to major Studio Art, first go to W&M's Degreeworks, and log in. On the left-hand menu, select "What If?" and run an evaluation on your intended major. This will tell you what requirements you have already fulfilled and what you still have left to do.

If you plan to double-major or minor, add that to your evaluation. Play with the requirements you have yet to fulfill and the other courses you want to take. Try and figure out how they will fit in your schedule over the next couple of years. Are your plans manageable based on the time you have left at W&M? Don't forget to add in time for study abroad or independent research.

Step 2: Meet with a prospective major advisor.

Identify a Studio Art professor whom you would like to be your major advisor. You may choose any member of the Studio Art faculty to serve in that role. Review the Worksheet for Studio Art Concentrators and make an appointment with the professor to discuss the major and your course of study. The worksheet is a tool that clearly spells out our requirements and suggestions.

Step 3: Complete the Declaration of Major Form.

In consultation with your major advisor, select courses for your major and complete the Declaration of Major form in DocuSign. Both you and your major advisor will sign the declaration form electronically. The form will be forwarded automatically to the Department of Art & Art History office, then on to the Registrar. Your name and email address will be added to the department listserv so you will receive information about important events and opportunities. Make arrangements to meet with your major advisor at least once a semester. If your plans change and you want to adjust your course plan, be sure to discuss this with your major advisor to ensure that you fulfill all the requirements.
