I am a historical archaeologist focused on agricultural landscapes. My recent work examines Virginia farms during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and particularly seeks to understand the relationship of agricultural tenants and other small-scale producers to larger economic and cultural realities during that period. I use many lines of evidence in this research, including GIS-based analytical tools, historical aerial photographs and maps, vegetation survey, and archaeological excavation. Much of this work has focused on tenancy sites in the Virginia Piedmont. In my current role as a postdoctoral fellow, I am conducting an extensive research project on Slabtown/Uniontown, a historic African-American community located on what is now part of Yorktown Battlefield.
