Background

Sean Devlin, Senior Curator of Archaeological Collections, has over twenty years of experience as a practicing archaeologist in corporate, academic, and museum-based organizations. Sean’s research interests have centered on the comparative origins, evolution, and legacies of colonial societies within the broader Anglo-Atlantic world. As such, his work has included research at numerous plantation and urban sites in Virginia, as well as, the Caribbean islands of Barbados and Jamaica.

Since joining the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 2021, Sean has directed work focused on the standardization, digitization, and increased accessibility of the Foundation’s archaeological data and collections. He has also led efforts for the exhibition of archaeology knowledge, such as the opening of the exhibit Worlds Collide: Archaeology and Global Trade in Williamsburg in 2024.

Sean holds a Bachelor’s degree in History (Washington and Lee University), a Master’s degree in Anthropology (The College of William and Mary), and a Ph.D. in Anthropology (University of Minnesota).
