Why W&M

I almost did not apply to William & Mary. In fact, I removed it from my Common App just a week before the application deadline. As an out-of-state student, I assumed attending simply wouldn't be financially possible. I knew the campus was gorgeous; I knew there was robust academic opportunity, and as a history nerd, I could already picture myself exploring Williamsburg. I desperately wanted a college community that facilitated mentorship and promoted intellectual curiosity.

The night the application was due, I had a spontaneous feeling I had to apply-maybe it could be made possible. I submitted the essays I had spent countless hours writing and hoped for the best. When I was not only accepted, but informed I was a 1693 semifinalist, I was ecstatic. I jumped out of my seat and threw my hands in the air in the middle of AP Chemistry I was so overwhelmed with excitement. Becoming a finalist, and later being invited to 1693 Scholars Weekend, only made me more certain that I had found a place unlike any other. After the first day of the program, I vividly remember telling my mom that I had never been surrounded by so many people who were genuinely invested in one another's success. The warmth and encouragement were unlike anything I had experienced. So, when Dr. Cristol called to ask if I would join the 1693 Scholars Program, there was only one possible answer: an enthusiastic "Yes!"
