Why W&M

When people ask me why I decided to attend William & Mary, my answer always changes—because there are so many reasons to choose from! My response often rotates among W&M’s emphasis on undergraduate research, to W&M's small student body led by inspiring faculty, to W&M's myriad of accessible opportunities. The 1693 Scholars Program embraces each of these factors, amplifies them, then adds on invaluable mentorship and a tight-knit community of passionate and driven scholars.

Coming all the way from California, I didn’t know many W&M students or alumni who could tell me about their experience. But every time I met one, I received a raving review about the genuine character of the students as well as the academically rigorous yet collaborative atmosphere. This impression fully solidified during Finalist Weekend, where I remember being greeted with so much warmth by students pursuing a wide variety of passions. I was particularly struck by how every scholar was deeply invested in something meaningful, from exciting research projects to significant campus organizations, despite how diverse their interests were. When I eagerly accepted the offer to join the 1693 program, I was moved by the countless messages welcoming me to my home for the next four years.

Looking back at the list I curated in high school detailing everything I hoped for in a college, it’s incredible to see how W&M—and especially the 1693 Scholars Program—fulfills each wish, from priorities as crucial as the academic climate and study abroad programs to niceties like living on the coast. I am so thrilled to be a part of this community and can’t wait to grow in ways I have yet to imagine!
