ISSP Scholarships

The Office of International Students, Scholars, and Programs (ISSP) has some limited funds from which it provides scholarships and need-based financial aid to international students at W&M.  These funds help us support students in need, enable educational experiences, and recognize the contributions of our international student community. 

General eligibility criteria for ISSP scholarships and aid:

  • Student enrolled and in good standing at W&M.

ISSP Scholarship and Aid Opportunities


1. International Student Financial Hardship Aid

Purpose: To support a student with acute financial need due that arose from circumstances outside his/her control (e.g. loss of parental or sponsor support, devaluation of currency, high medical costs, etc).

Amount: Maximum $1000 

Process:

  • Student submits the International Student Financial Hardship Aid Application Form along with supporting documentation to evidence his/her request. Examples of supporting evidence include a letter from the sponsor, medical bills, etc
    • Login to iStart using your W&M ID and Password
    • Click on International Office in the menu on the left-hand side. Then click on the International Student Hardship Aid Application and complete the form.
  • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee on a rolling basis (i.e. applications are accepted throughout the year).
  • Student will be notified by email of award and will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.
  • Funds are distributed as a reimbursement, direct pay of costs, or applied to tuition.

2. International Student Opportunity Scholarship

Purpose: Enable international students to participate in special opportunities (e.g. an unpaid internship, attend a conference, etc).

Amount: Typically up to $500

Process:

  • Student submits the International Student Opportunity Scholarship Application Form along with any applicable supporting documentation to evidence his/her request. 
    • Login to iStart using your W&M ID and Password
    • Click on International Office in the menu on the left-hand side. Then click on International Student Opportunity Scholarship and complete the form.

  • Application deadline: November 10 for opportunities taking place between November 2017-June 2018; March 1 for opportunities taking place between May 2018-December 2018.

  • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee and decisions rendered by November 15 and March 15.
  • Student will be notified by email of award and will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.
  • Funds are distributed as a reimbursement, direct pay of costs, or applied to tuition.
  • Expenses for study abroad are not covered by this scholarship. For study abroad aid, please contact the Global Education Office at wmabroad@wm.edu

3. International Student Achievement Award - Nominated

Purpose: To recognize international students who have distinguished themselves in academics, service and leadership. Faculty and administrators nominate an international student for this award.

Amount: $500

Process:

  • W&M faculty or administrator submits the International Student Award Nomination Form to the Reves Center.
  • We will begin accepting applications in early February and the application deadline is March 1.
  • Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee and decisions rendered by March 15.
  • Nominator and Student will be notified by email of award. Student will be required to sign an acceptance form and write a letter of appreciation prior to distribution of funds.
