Power BI is a data visualization tool that enables users to easily transform data into live dashboards and reports. Users can create insights from an Excel spreadsheet or a local dataset and then collaborate and share those insights with others. Power BI also offers extensive modeling, real-time analytics, and custom visualizations.

Notes about Power BI at William & Mary:

  • W&M's license includes the free version of Power BI. Advanced features in Power BI will require an additional cost.  If you would like to purchase an upgrade to Power BI Pro, please contact the Technology Support Center.
  • To protect W&M data records, no connections to W&M data sources, such as Banner, will be allowed.

 

Get Set-Up
Online Access to Power BI

You can access Power BI by going to office.wm.edu and clicking on the Power BI tile.

Download the Mobile App

Stay in touch with the Power BI Mobile App!  Search for Microsoft Power BI in the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store

Computer Client Installation
  • Go to office.wm.edu
  • Click on the Power BI tile
  • Click on the download arrow on the top-right corner of the page
  • Select Power BI Desktop  
  • Follow the installation prompts

Microsoft's support site offers an overview of Power BI features with step-by-step instructions on its Power BI Quick Start webpage.

Microsoft Video Training 

Select videos related to specific Power BI topics on the Power BI Webinars webpage.

Lynda.com Video Training Course
Lynda.com offers various high-quality video training sessions on the Office 365. You can go through cornerstone.wm.edu to access the videos, and it will be listed on your W&M training transcript. 

A good starter course for Power BI is called: Learning Power BI Desktop (2016).  Follow these instructions to find it:

  • Go to cornerstone.wm.edu
  • Sign in with your WMuserid and password
  • Click on the green Browse for Training button on the right side of the page
  • In the search bar in the upper right corner, type Power BI
  • Click on the name of the course you wish to view - Learning Power BI Desktop (2016)
  • Click Request
  • Click Launch to view the training
