The Office of the Chief Data Officer (CDO) leads William & Mary’s enterprise data strategy, unifying Institutional Research, Data & Analytics, and data governance to ensure that data is accurate, accessible, and responsibly used. The CDO evolves university-wide data standards, stewardship practices, and analytical platforms to support secure access, quality reporting, and timely, data-driven decisions. The role also prepares W&M for responsible AI by ensuring high-quality, well-governed data that will power future innovation.

University Data

The Fact Books are based on census data that is created every fall and spring and is the basis for regulatory reporting by Institutional Research. Research and explore W&M-detailed data in interactive Fact Books. Access is granted to all W&M staff and faculty via the data discovery tool Qlik (pronounced "Click").

Data Self-Service

W&M faculty and staff have access to operational data used to manage the university through the Qlik tool. The data is sourced from Banner and major W&M operational systems. Users can search and filter data to generate an endless variety of result sets to quickly identify trends, anomalies, and aggregations vital to their day-to-day decisions. Qlik Sense supports an assortment of visualizations, including tables, bar charts, pivot tables, line charts, gauges, maps, KPIs, and many more!

A library of governed data exists and continues to evolve and expand. The Qlik App Tracker contains a list of Qlik Apps currently available to members of the W&M user community. Qlik App data is subject to W&M’s Acceptable Use Policy and access to a particular App is governed by Application and Data Steward(s).

The DGAC oversees activities and investments to improve organizational decision-making and excellence through a laser focus on data fluency, governance and management across the entire university. Our goal is to manage data as an asset in a way that empowers W&M faculty and staff to use data in increasingly effective, efficient and ethical ways.

The Data Objective

To improve organizational decision-making and excellence through a laser focus on data literacy, governance and management across the university. To manage data as an asset in a way that empowers faculty and staff to use data in increasingly effective, efficient and ethical ways.
The Approach

Join together stakeholders from diverse data silos in an ongoing process to ensure high quality data is available to make data-informed decisions for the entire W&M community, at all levels. The W&M Data Team operationalizes data self-service, enables advanced data technologies and capabilities and shares learnings.

Data Principles A set of values and philosophical beliefs that W&M will adopt to frame the process, policy and standards to govern data. Creating a clear understanding of W&M people data (Faculty, Staff, Students) will be our starting focus. The DG working teams will solve existing data challenges, support key initiatives, define data standards and recommend best usage. 1) Data is a sustainable W&M asset. 2) Data quality and informed usage is the responsibility of W&M Faculty, Staff and Students. 3) Data is secured and used in legal and ethical ways; privacy is respected. 4) Data is defined collaboratively by data stewards/owners with best usage. 5) Data is timely and is readily available. 6) Data flow is actively managed and communicated. 7) Data curiosity and skills are everyone's responsibility; W&M supports data learning. 8) Data is understood and used in context. 9) Decisions are made on quality data. (Accurate, Completeness, Consistency, Integrity, Timeliness, Reasonability) 10) W&M community has shared quality data to do their best work.
Data Standards A Data Standard clarifies how data should be handled, by whom and with what level of auditing and oversight. The Data Standards generally align with a W&M Policy and are implemented through the local business processes. The documents go through a process of draft, review and approved.

Define, approve, communicate implement principles, policies, procedures, metrics, tools and responsibilities for data management. Monitor and guide policy compliance, data usage and management activities. Create a W&M data culture that is highly skilled in using data in an ethical manner.
