Academic Affairs Intro
Academic Affairs at William & Mary serves as the central hub for supporting and coordinating the university’s academic mission. Through strategic guidance, policy development, and cross-campus collaboration, the office ensures the integrity, innovation, and effectiveness of academic programs.
In partnership with faculty, schools, and university leadership, Academic Affairs helps shape the academic experience, aligning initiatives with institutional goals.
Senior Vice Provost David Yalof
David A. Yalof is the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at William & Mary, where he plays a central role in shaping the university’s academic direction. As the chief advisor to the Provost on academic matters, he provides leadership in curriculum development, academic program planning, and institutional compliance. He works closely with university leadership, academic schools, and the Faculty Assembly to support William & Mary’s strategic goals, including those outlined in the Vision 2026 plan.

Academic Affairs at William & Mary ensures the seamless execution and support of academic services and organizations supporting the university's education, research and public service mission.

Academic Common Marketplace
Enables students to pursue out-of-state college degrees at in-state tuition rates for specific degree programs through agreements between states, colleges, and universities.

Graduate Center
Partners with other offices on campus to offer many types of programs, including professional development events and writing support to help students develop specific skills and excel academically and professionally.

Institutional Accreditation & Effectiveness
A division of the Provost's Office that oversees W&M’s accreditation, approvals by SCHEV, and institutional assessment and evaluation processes. They also ensure compliance with federal and state academic regulations.
Data Trends
The provost's office provides information on data trends in student enrollment and faculty data. This information is updated annually to help observe changes and inform decision-making. In addition to the data presented, faculty may access the William & Mary data self-service tool, Qlik, to explore the university's available data.
In Spring 2023, Professor Dana Willner's DATA 303, Data Visualization students used their data science skills to further illustrate the Student Enrollment Trends data through a series of visual data stories.
Academic Initiatives
Academic Affairs supports the provost in various strategic areas that contribute to the university's academic mission. By engaging with faculty, staff, students and other partners, Academic Affairs explores ideas to inform the insight necessary to develop these initiatives and enhance the William & Mary experience. The following are some of the efforts that are currently being developed:

University-Wide AI Policy Initiative (AIPI)
Recommends the design and establishment of comprehensive policies by university decision makers that will guide the ethical, effective, and responsible use of AI across academic, research, and operational domains at the university.

Applied Research & Innovation Initiative (ARII)
An externally funded program that aims to seed and scale applied research across the university; supports multidisciplinary teams to work on applied projects that address societally important issues that also align with the goals of Vision 2026 and intersect with the missions of any host units.

COVES Science Policy Fellowship
A program where fellows receive training in science policy and communication, spend time in legislative offices, executive agencies, companies, or nonprofits in the state, and are paired with a mentor. Fellows are also involved in briefings, meetings, and the annual summit in August.

Interdisciplinary Research Innovation Fund
Funds focusing on Arts & Humanities; to maintain excellence in research and support innovation in emerging areas of scientific and societal interest, the Provost is allocating $300,000 in one-time funding for new internal interdisciplinary research grants.

Sustainable Curriculum
A review process for each of W&M’s component schools is led by the dean of each school, in collaboration with faculty, administration, and other school-specific partners. This effort is designed to ensure that each school’s curriculum reaches specific benchmarks.

Virginia Coastal Resilience Collaborative (VCRC)
A cross-university initiative that expands existing W&M and VIMS programs addressing water resources and ecosystems, as well as coastal resilience. A signature initiative of Vision 2026, the collaborative offers an approach to coastal resilience research, scholarship, education and advisory work.

A research lab based at W&M’s Global Research Institute. AidData equips policymakers and practitioners with better evidence to improve how sustainable development investments are targeted, monitored, and evaluated.

Cybersecurity Center
Facilitates innovation in research and cross-unit curriculum, teaching, and programming related to cybersecurity at W&M.

Entrepreneurship Hub
Educates, inspires, and supports people in developing and applying entrepreneurial skills and mindsets. We view entrepreneurship through the wider lens of entrepreneurial thinking — a highly versatile set of skills and mindset necessary to solve problems.

Global Research Institute
A multidisciplinary hub that brings together academics, practitioners, staff, and students to tackle contemporary global issues.

Institute for Integrative Conservation
At the forefront of transformational research and education aimed at solving critical conservation issues that impact global biodiversity.

Whole of Government Center of Excellence
A national security hub for the university that trains and educates a new generation of future leaders who have hands-on, practical experience working across different organizational cultures.

William & Mary Washington Center
Partners with faculty from departments and schools across the university to offer high-impact learning experiences for students in all majors. Among the diverse topics offered are government, policy, culture, business, education, and more.
Academic Common Marketplace
The Academic Common Market (ACM) is a Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) program that enables students to pursue out-of-state college degrees at in-state tuition rates for specific degree programs through agreements between states, colleges, and universities. Additional information about the ACM is available on the SREB website.
