Description: IPE is “is the leading undergraduate research journal in economics. Students may submit articles on all topics of economics, but “papers should be analytical and seek to add new understanding to the topic.”

Journal of Politics & Society (JPS) (all disciplines)

Description: JPS is “is the United States’ premier interdisciplinary journalof undergraduate scholarship in the social sciences, published by the Helvidius Group of Columbia University.” It “provides a forum for young scholars to contribute to the global dialogue on a diverse range of issues, including problems of politics, economics, public policy, social phenomena, international relations, and law.” JPS “is not affiliated with or sponsored by any political organization, and it remains staunchly nonpartisan.”

JPS “will award a prize to the author of the article judged most worthy by the Editorial Board in conjunction with faculty at Columbia University.” Authors may submit manuscript to other publications, but must withdraw the work from consideration if the student is selected for publication in JPS. “No previously published paper will be published, nor may a paper be reprinted elsewhere without permission.”

Description: The International Atlantic Economic Society (IAES) invites students to compete in the IAES annual undergraduate paper competition. Finalists will present their papers at the annual IAES conference. Winners of the Best Undergraduate Paper Award receive $1,000, a commemorative plaque, and complimentary publication of their paper in the Atlantic Economic Journal.

Comparative Advantage: Stanford Undergraduate Economics Journal (economics)

Description: Comparative Advantage is the annual undergraduate economics journal of Stanford University. The journal accepts unpublished research papers, theses, course term papers, essays, opinion pieces, and reviews. The journal accepts submissions from “work in any field of economics and in related disciplines, such as political science, public policy, international relations, management science, applied mathematics, business, and finance.”
Deadline: November 20, 2020 (Winter 2021 edition); other date TBD
Student Status: Undergraduate students enrolled at two or four year universities
Reviewers: All submissions are reviewed, and the reviewers “look for originality, compelling evidence, and strong analysis.”
Miscellaneous: Papers should not exceed 25 pages. Two issues are published each year. While authors may submit their work to other publications, they must withdraw it from consideration is the Stanford journal decides to publish it.

American Journal of Undergraduate Research (AJUR) (all disciplines)

Description: AJUR is “a national, independent, faculty peer-reviewed, open-source, quarterly, multidisciplinary student research journal.” AJUR accepts “new work in all fields…if the work demonstrates sufficient novelty and contribution to the field.”
Deadline: No submission deadlines
Student Status: Research must have conducted as an undergraduate; recent graduates may submit
Reviewers: Faculty peer-reviewed. The editorial board consists of approximately sixty professional subject editors in a wide variety of fields. The subject editor finds three expert reviewers for submissions and may use a list of potential reviewers provided by the author.
Miscellaneous: While AJUR does not limit page length, “the manuscript should be of a typical article length in your discipline.” Your faculty mentor “should read, edit, and approve your manuscript for submission.” Submitted manuscripts must not have been submitted or published elsewhere. Acceptance rate is 22%.
Berkeley Economic Review (BER) (economics, political science, public policy, business, statistics)

Description: Berkeley Economic Review “is the University of California, Berkeley’s premier undergraduate, peer-reviewed, academic economics journal.” It publishes “undergraduate research papers, term papers, and honors theses in the field of economics, political science, public policy, business, statistics, and related fields. All undergraduate students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university are welcome to submit content for review.

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research (BJUR) (all disciplines)

Description: BJUR “publishes original, scholarly research” by undergraduates from any university. “BJUR builds upon and strengthens Butler’s commitment to quality undergraduate research by providing an outlet for the publication of outstanding undergraduate scholarship across the humanities, social and natural sciences.” BJUR “recognizes and supports diverse disciplines, perspectives and methods across the social sciences, natural and life sciences, the arts and humanities.”

Reviewers: Submitted papers are reviewed by “faculty with general and specialized expertise in the field of study represented by the work.” Final decisions are made by the editorial advisory board and the editors.

The student(s) must be the sole author(s) and “their submission must be accompanied by a letter from their college or university instructor/professor recommending the student(s)’ work for publication.”
Columbia Economic Review (CER) (economics)

Description: CER is the “first undergraduate economics journal in the United States.” It “aims to promote economics discourse and research at the intersection of business, politics, society and more by publishing a rigorous selection of student essays, opinions and research papers in a print journal released each semester.” The journal publishes economic research by students at other universities.

Reviewers: Past website noted -- “CER has a team of senior editors and editors who are selected for their academic accomplishments, superior writing skills and research experience. All submissions will be reviewed rigorously and [they] will select the papers best exemplifying strong analytic thought and originality.” The editors are likely students, as the website states: “CER is entirely led, organized, and operated by undergraduate students at Columbia across a multitude of academic disciplines.”

Inquiries Journal (all disciplines)

Description: Inquiries Journal is an “open-access academic journal that highlights the work of students at the undergraduate level and above. The journal publishes work across a range of academic disciplines with a particular focus on the social sciences, arts, and humanities.” The journal has “no official affiliation and is financially independent.” Submissions are accepted from students at top universities around the world.

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (IJURCA) (all disciplines)

Description: IJURCA is a “peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to the publication of outstanding scholarship by undergraduates and their mentors.” The journal accepts submissions of research articles from undergraduate students in all academic fields from all institutions of higher learning.

Reviewers: Submissions “undergo a double-blind review by a minimum of two faculty members affiliated with institutions of higher learning from around the world… The faculty reviewers have expertise in disciplines closely related to those represented by the submission. Journal of Undergraduate Research (JUR) (all disciplines)

Description: JUR, operated out of Colorado State University, is a “peer-reviewed, undergraduate journal registered with the Library of Congress that accepts submissions of any subject, from any undergraduate institution.” The journal accepts research, review, or journalism articles.

Student Status: Current undergraduates and recent graduates who submit their work up to one year after the date of their graduation
Reviewers: “Faculty, graduate, and undergraduate referees review submission and recommend a course of action for the work. All submissions are read by a member of the editorial staff; only those that seem likely to meet the standards of JUR are sent to referees in order to save time for authors and referees.” JUR's “peer-review process is double-blind; authors and reviewers are never informed of each other's identities.”
Miscellaneous: JUR is limited to 30 pages. No submission may have been previously published or currently be under consideration by another journal. Authors retain copyright ownership.
Stanford Undergraduate Research Journal (SURJ) (all disciplines)

Description: SURJ is an “annual peer-reviewed publication of research articles from all academic fields.” It “primarily publishes work produced by Stanford undergraduates, but also publishes papers from well-qualified students at other institutions.”

Student Status: Current undergraduate students or former students who have been out of school no more than one year
Reviewers: “All submitted papers undergo review by SURJ’s team of editors [students], who subsequently deliberate and select the best submitted papers for publication.”
Miscellaneous: Papers should be between 2,000 and 4,000 words. Students should contact SURJ about their requirements related to prior publication/consideration someplace else – the website contains two completely contradictory statements on this issue.
Undergraduate Economic Review (UER) (economics)

Description: UER is a “peer-reviewed journal aimed at promoting high quality undergraduate research. It is supported by the Department of Economics and The Ames Library at Illinois Wesleyan University.” The UER “publishes articles by undergraduate researchers that have original ideas and economic content. Most articles have some empirical content.”
Deadline: No deadlines; however, no review between May-August
Student Status: Undergraduates and recent graduates who did the work as undergrads; “[T]he student must request a letter from a faculty member at his or her institution, confirming that the manuscript was completed as part of the student's undergraduate work.”
Reviewers: Student editors review submissions, and faculty advisors are involved
Miscellaneous: Although there is no page limit requirement, most papers are between 15 and 30 pages. Faculty should not be listed as authors. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published or under review elsewhere. Acceptance rates are generally between 40%-45% each year.
