Raft Debate Victory

Jonah Goldwater playing devil's advocate at the Raft DebateWhich discipline should survive a desert island to save humanity? Playing the Devil’s Advocate at the annual Raft Debate, Teaching Professor Jonah Goldwater successfully convinced attendees to leave the humanities, sciences, and social sciences behind! Described as a "delicate balance of comedy and lecture, ” the annual Raft Debate unites four faculty members to determine who should—or shouldn’t—escape a desert island and return to civilization. The beloved tradition features participants from the Arts & Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the Natural, Mathematical and Health Sciences, as well as a Devil’s Advocate who sarcastically argues that none are worth saving. Professor Goldwater specializes in wisdom, freedom, metaphysics, critical thinking, and the meaning of life. He currently holds a W. Taylor Reveley III Interdisciplinary Faculty Fellowship, awarded for co-creating the course “Cultivating Wisdom” with Professor Michael Luchs.
