Professor Matthew Haug Recently Promoted
This year, Matthew Haug was promoted to Full Professor. He is currently working with Professor Meghan Quinn (W&M, Psychological Sciences) to test the “indirect harmony hypothesis” about self-control as a personality trait, which he defended in his 2025 book, Rethinking Self-Control.
He is also working with three W&M students to explore how proactive models of self-control may inform research in criminology and public health. Additionally, he is contributing to a project led by professors from Religious Studies, Psychological Sciences, and Neuroscience investigating how cultural assumptions influence people’s reasons for engaging in mindfulness and meditation practices and, ultimately, whether these assumptions influence these practices' effects. He continues to enjoy teaching classes on moral psychology, philosophy of mind, and the ethics of neuroscience and data science.
