Japanese Documentary Film Screening

Four short documentaries will be shown as part of the event.

7:00 ~ NO農家

NO農家」is about Kazuyoshi Sugimoto’s efforts to combat the declining farming population in Japan. By using social media to create engagement and teaching young workers how to farm, while listening to their opinions, Sugimoto is working to create an environment that fosters a balance between crop harvest and engagement with farming. 

7:20 ~ OO者たち

Marumaru Monotachi is a documentary about the experiences of disabled people in Japan. It follows those with mental and developmental disabilities, their loved ones, and those who work with them, such as teachers, professors, and those who work for organizations dedicated to the well-being of disabled people. Throughout the documentary, they share their experiences and provide insight into how Japanese society can better accommodate those with disabilities.

7:45 ~ まつぼっくりと牛丼 (Pinecones and Beef Bowls)

Pinecone and Gyudon is a short film by Yoshiko Nakamo about the life of Sachiko Nakamura, a 92 year old shoe-shiner who has been working in Shimbashi for 70 years. The documentary follows her while she shines shoes, eats her beloved gyudon, and goes about her daily life. It also details her long life, and her impact on commuters in Shimbashi, inviting contemplation on society, on economy, and on any one individual’s place in our ever-changing world.

8:15 ~ あるけあるけ 浪江町、未来へ歩み (Carry On: Namie Town, Step Into the Future)

Carry On: Namie Town, Step Into the Future is a documentary about the people of Namie Town and how they have recovered from the 3/11 disaster that devastated Fukushima Prefecture and the Tohoku region. After the disaster, it was difficult to come back to their homes for several years. This documentary tells the stories of those who have dedicated themselves to maintaining the culture and the way of life of Namie’s people. 

 

All films are in Japanese with English subtitles.
The English subtitles were created by students in JAPN402 (Advanced Japanese II) this semester.
