Japanese Studies & Computer Science

When I was accepted to William & Mary, I always intended to major in Computer Science. However, while working with my parents in developing my overarching course selection plan, I discovered that I could major in both Computer Science and Japanese Studies if I wanted to. So, I did, and I do not regret that decision. While I had already been interested in anime since high school, taking courses in both the Japanese Language and Culture has given me a far greater understanding and appreciation for Japan, its people, its culture, and its tradition. It was also incredibly valuable to take courses through the Japanese Studies Department which honed skills and knowledge far removed from my other major, allowing me to become far more well-rounded. I was also given the incredible opportunity to study abroad at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan for an entire semester. Far from just being the first time I was living in foreign country for an extended period, it was the first time I had gone to a country other than Canada. Considering all the experiences I had, the people I met, and of course the amazing food I was able to eat, my time abroad will be something that I will never forget. As I move forward after graduation, I am confident that the wealth of knowledge, skills, and experience that I have gained through studying Japan will be an invaluable asset, as well as something to look back on fondly for years to come.
