Title: How Groups, Geometry, and Arithmetic Come Together
Abstract:
There is a beautiful family of groups that appear naturally in the wild all across mathematics -- relating number theory, dynamics, topology, and geometric group theory -- called free-by-cyclic and surface-by-cyclic groups. I will present a number of examples of these groups and their relationship to geometry, discussing why I find their study so deeply motivating along the way. The talk will end with some of my own work attempting to understand a probabilistic model for these groups in the context of arithmetic geometry and number theory.
