Justin Pariseau awarded Cuffe Fellowship

Graduate student Justin Pariseau has been awarded a 2007 Paul Cuffe Memorial Fellowship through Mystic Seaport's Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies. The Cuffe Fellowship is offered to encourage the study of minorities in American maritime history, and will enable Justin to conduct research for a chapter of his dissertation, "Abolitionist Whalemen: Race, Class, and Antislavery Activism in the New England Whalefishery, 1775-1877." Justin will spend three weeks this fall working with collections at Mystic Seaport, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and the Nantucket Historical Association. He will examine the treatment of African American whalemen aboard ship and whether the whaling fleet's mixed-race crews put abolitionist rhetoric into practice at sea.
