Department of Government Culture & Values

Supporting an Academic Culture of Excellence and Success in the Curriculum

The Government department fosters an environment of intellectual rigor and open inquiry. Our students engage with the core areas of political science—political theory, American politics, comparative politics and international relations—gaining both a broad understanding of the field and opportunities for focused, independent research. They learn to analyze institutions and processes at every level, reflect on the ethical dimensions of political action, and communicate their insights with clarity and precision. Writing and independent inquiry are central to the curriculum.

First-year students encounter the discipline through writing-intensive seminars, while advanced seminars—capped at fifteen students—require substantial original projects. Majors are encouraged to pursue honors theses or independent studies, and faculty regularly mentor undergraduates as research assistants and co-authors. These collaborations often lead to publications or professional presentations, preparing students to participate in scholarly debates at the highest level.

The department is equally committed to long-term student development. Faculty support students in pursuing internships, scholarships, study abroad and graduate or professional opportunities.

Beyond the classroom, the department sustains a vibrant intellectual community through colloquia and lectures that bring leading scholars and practitioners to campus. These events broaden perspectives, encourage debate, and model the habits of inquiry, collaboration and communication that prepare students for success in every field.

Supporting the Success of All Students

The Government department is committed to supporting the success of all students, majors and minors alike, by providing a wide range of academic, professional and community opportunities. Our faculty mentor students through every stage of their academic journey, from introductory courses to advanced independent research, ensuring that all students have access to the resources they need to thrive.

Outside the classroom, students participate in academic clubs and organizations that build community and extend learning, such as the International Relations Club, the Alexander Hamilton Society, and William & Mary’s award-winning Model United Nations team.

Many students also engage in research through the department or affiliated centers, gaining hands-on experience with policy analysis, survey design and data collection. We work to ensure that students are made aware of these opportunities in advising meetings and by comprehensive information available on our website. Thanks to the generosity of donors to the department, we provide support to many students who are engaged in faculty-led or independent research.

The department places a strong emphasis on professional development, helping students secure internships in Washington, D.C., Richmond and beyond, as well as opportunities abroad. Faculty and staff provide guidance on graduate school, law school and other career paths, and our alumni network offers valuable mentorship and connections across sectors. Alumni pursue careers across public service, law, policy, business, education, non-profits and medicine, demonstrating the versatility of skills and perspectives cultivated through the major.

Through this combination of curricular rigor, mentoring, student organizations and professional experiences, the Government department sustains a vibrant community that empowers students to succeed in their studies and beyond.

Supporting the Success of Faculty and Staff

The Government department supports the success of its faculty and staff by fostering a collegial, collaborative and professionally enriching environment. Faculty benefit from a strong culture of mentoring at every career stage. Junior colleagues receive structured guidance on teaching, research and service, while mid-career and senior faculty are encouraged to pursue leadership roles within the university and the wider discipline.

The department also actively supports faculty research through course releases, internal funding opportunities and encouragement of external grants, leading to numerous books, articles and professional recognitions in recent years.

Staff members are integral to the department’s success and are supported through opportunities for professional development, recognition of their expertise, and inclusion in departmental decision-making.

Both faculty and staff contribute to community engagement by advising student organizations, mentoring undergraduate researchers and partnering with programs across campus.

Through these efforts, the department cultivates a professional environment in which faculty and staff can excel, grow and contribute to the mission of William & Mary as teachers, scholars and community members.
