Abdul-Karim Rafeq Becomes Honorary Fellow of MESA
Prof. Abdul-Karim Rafeq, the Bickers Professor of Arab Middle Eastern Studies in the Dept. of History, has recently received several honors. He has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship in the Middle East Studies Association in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding contributions to Middle East studies. The status of Honorary Fellow has no term limit and confers upon the fellow the full privileges of a membership. MESA's current roster of honorary fellows includes Halil Inalcik, Andre Raymond, Oleg Grabar, Nikkie Keddie, Afaf Lutfi Al-Sayyid Marsot, E. Roger Owen, Kamal Salibi, and Suraiya Faroqhi.
In addition, he has been an honorary research fellow at the Toyo Bunko Institute in Tokyo, Japan. The Toyo Bunko is the most prestigious research center in Japan. As a honorary research fellow, Prof. Rafeq has contributed to the research activities of the center through lectures and seminars, and has acted as a bridge between the Toyo Bunko research community and the research community in the United States and the Middle East.
We congratulate Prof. Rafeq on these recent honors, and thank him for his continuing contribution to Middle Eastern studies at the College of William and Mary, and to the field as a whole.
