avery-photo.jpgWe are delighted to announce that Kate Avery 2019 has been awarded first place in this year’s Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) essay contest (College/University division) for her essay, “Faithfully, Yours: Womanhood, Faith, and ‘A Woman’s Portion’ in Persuasion.”  Kate wrote the essay in Professor Kim Wheatley’s Jane Austen course last spring.  As first place winner, Kate will receive a scholarship of $1,000 and free registration and two nights’ lodging for JASNA’s 2018 Annual General Meeting, a three-day conference on the topic “Persuasion: Two Hundred Years of Constancy and Hope.”  (Persuasion, Austen’s last completed novel, was first published in 1818.)  Kate plans to travel to Kansas City, Missouri, in late September to attend the conference.  Her prize also includes a year’s free membership in JASNA for herself and Professor Wheatley, and a set of Norton Critical Editions of Jane Austen's novels.  Kate’s winning essay has been posted on the JASNA website at
