Lucas Snipes '73 recently retired after over 40 years in Health Care Admin - (and having been a panelist for Econ - career day a number of years ago)- I want to answer the question - "What do you do with a degree in Econ - when you are not going to grad school?". During my career I did serve as a hospital administrator - for about 20 years. The smallest 26 beds and the largest - a $500 million in annual revenue medical center. Other jobs - Human Resources (SrVP) for the largest private employer in VA west of Richmond, Strategic planner, head of marketing ($2million/ year ad budget), Mergers and acquisitions, new ventures, consolidations, and I tangled with the Feds and won a merger case. Also, population health issues, labor relations, and I led the merging of comp and benefits - including changes to the 5-6 different pension plans and pre-tax savings plan... without running afoul of regs. The department taught me to "think like an economist" and that is what allowed me to handle these many varied tasks. (10/16)
