Professor Swetnam-Burland wins W&M's Jennifer and Devin Murphy Faculty Award

Professor Swetnam-BurlandProfessor SB was honored with the Jennifer and Devin Murphy Faculty Award, given annually by the Dean of Arts and Sciences in recognition of faculty who integrate research into their teaching. Dean Raitt commended Professor Swetnam-Burland for her mentorship, noting that she has helped many students over the years develop and implement their own research projects in the field of Roman material culture. Many of these students are in top-tier grad programs today, including recently the University of North Carolina, the University of Arizona, and Harvard University.  Professor SB was also acknowledged for her work with the Liber Memorialis Project, in which students met weekly for two years to translate a little-known Latin text intended for a child of ten to twelve years old. Their work is being published by William & Mary Press as an ebook. Students also did research about Roman children. Based on their work, they wrote essays and produced podcasts that can be used by high school students today. Keep your eyes peeled for a book talk at Swem highlighting the publication in Spring 2027!
