Deadline
To ensure full consideration for admission and financial assistance, applications, including all supporting materials and test scores, should be completed by December 15. Applications received after December 15 will be reviewed on the basis of available space.
Spring Admission: No
Part-Time Students: Yes, but without funding
2021 Admissions: GRE
Due to COVID-19 and resulting challenges to taking the GRE, Graduate Arts & Sciences at William & Mary has suspended its GRE requirement for admission in 2021. The American Studies Program will not accept GRE scores for consideration as part of an application for fall 2021 admission.
Supplementary Application Materials
You will be asked to provide this information as part of the online application.
- Writing sample: Please provide a writing sample of approximately 20 pages (course paper, thesis chapter, etc.).
- Short essay: Please provide a short essay detailing intellectual interests and motives for pursuing a graduate degree in American Studies.
- Foreign language competency: Foreign language proficiency is required for the Ph.D. degree. If you are applying for the Ph.D. or the M.A./Ph.D. track, the Admissions Committee asks that you specify your current competency in one or more foreign languages (fluency, speaking, reading, coursework, etc.)
