Why W&M
William & Mary had been on my radar since the beginning of my college search. With a mom as a proud alumna, I grew up wearing green and gold T-shirts, drinking out of branded Tervis tumblers, and telling everyone that, even at two years old, I wanted to go to W&M. As I actually began looking at schools, writing essays, and filling out the dreaded Common App, the school moved closer to the back of my mind. I thought I wanted to be in a large city somewhere in the Northeast, with roads full of cars and public transportation (not necessarily horse-drawn carriages). Once I found out I was a 1693 semi-finalist, though, things started to change. I was immediately hooked by the program’s incredible support and connections, especially when it came to undergraduate research in the sciences.
I was incredibly happy to be offered the chance to come to Finalist Weekend, and even if I didn’t know it at the time, I think my choice was made the minute I stepped into Murray House. I was instantly welcomed, and even though everyone was a complete stranger, it started to feel like home. Hearing from so many intelligent and kind people with so many diverse interests was fascinating, but the best thing was what they shared – a passion for learning and a community with each other. My gut reaction was supported by the rest of the weekend. Whether it was sitting in on a neuroscience lecture that was actually an interactive class debate, walking through ISC labs with freshmen already deeply involved in research, or even taking a late-night walk for cookies with the other finalists, I knew I could see myself here.
A few days later, I walked out of a physics exam, checked my phone, and broke into a huge smile seeing Professor Cristol’s text offering me a place in the program. I waited to say yes until I talked with my parents that night, but I knew the answer right away. I couldn’t be more excited to join this welcoming, accomplished, and exciting community!
