International collaborations expand learning and research opportunities for faculty and students. They are also critical to achieving several of W&M’s key objectives in Vision 2026, including raising our global name recognition. 

The Reves Center leads W&M’s internationalization efforts by strengthening our global collaborations and extensive network of global partnerships.

University of St Andrews 

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

Activity types: Undergraduate Joint Degree, student exchange program, summer study abroad program, First Abroad abroad, Faculty Exchange, faculty research collaborations

Partner institution: University of St Andrews

William & Mary and the University of St Andrews began a student exchange in September, 2004.

Since fall of 2011, William & Mary and St Andrews have been offering joint degree programs in Classical Studies, Economics, English, Film Studies, History, and International Relations. Students complete two years at each institution and earn a single diploma—a Bachelor of Arts (International Honors) - with the insignias of both institutions.

Through the joint degree program, the two universities have extensive collaborative research and short-term faculty exchanges

In 2022, William & Mary and St Andrews expanded their partnership through a summer study-abroad program.  

Keio University

Location: Tokyo, Japan

Partner institution: Keio University

William & Mary’s partnership with Keio University dates back to 1990 when the Keio/W&M
Cross-Cultural Collaboration
began. The program pairs Japanese students with W&M graduate
and undergraduate students who act as program assistants and dialogue instructors and offers all
participants the chance to explore questions of cultural difference and national identity. Students
attend lectures on a variety of topics including race, religion, and pop culture, as well as
participate in fieldwork activities.

W&M and Keio University established a university-wide undergraduate exchange program over
twenty-five years ago. 

From 2000 to 2003, W&M and Keio University collaborated on an internship program.

In 2009, W&M and Keio University signed a partnership agreement, which is automatically
renewed unless otherwise determined.

W&M Law School has a semester exchange program with Keio University School of Law. Up to
two William & Mary students may be selected each year for each institution.

Beijing Normal University

Location: Beijing, China

William & Mary and Beijing Normal University (BNU) have a history of cooperation in academic and cultural exchanges, going back several decades. Some of the most recent collaborations include:

Educational Exchanges and Study Abroad
In 2013, W&M conducted a special ESL teacher training program for teachers from School of Foreign Languages and Literature at BNU.

Since 2015, over forty BNU undergraduates have attended summer courses on the W&M campus each year through the W&M-BNU Summer Program.

In 2013 and 2016, students from the W&M School of Education had educational visits to BNU and the BNU Experimental Primary School as a part of the course EDUC 500: Global Studies – Teaching and Learning in China.

Since 2019, BNU has hosted a W&M faculty-led summer study abroad program at BNU in addition to welcoming groups over winter break in 2019 and 2020.

In 2020 and 2021, BNU hosted W&M international students who could not return to W&M because of the pandemic.

Culture Exchanges and Academic Collaborations

Students and faculty from BNU's Dance Program visited William & Mary in Fall 2018. They participated in a number of exchange activities with W&M’s Dance Program and presented a public performance at W&M.

In July 2022, the School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Beijing Normal University (BNU) and the School of Education at William & Mary held the Virtual BNU-WM ESL Summer Institute. Past scholarly conferences include the Confucian Classics Faculty Forum and the International Conference on Time and Change.

In 2011, William & Mary and BNU established the William & Mary Confucius Institute, a collaborative educational and service partnership. It aimed to promote the study of Chinese language and culture, support the teaching of Chinese at both the host institution (W&M) and in local communities, and facilitate US-China cultural exchanges on various levels. WMCI transitioned into the W&M-BNU Collaborative Partnership in 2021.

In October 2013, an eight-member delegation from William & Mary led by President Taylor Reveley visited BNU.

Leiden University

Location: Leiden, Netherlands

Agreement duration: 1995 to Present

Partner institution: Leiden University

The partnership between William & Mary and Leiden University began in 1995, when an agreement of cooperation was signed for the exchange of faculty, staff, researchers, and students.

Since the academic year 1995-1996, up to two students per academic year from each institution have been exchanged.

In Spring 2023, W&M and Leiden students will be engaged in a virtual exchange as part of a Public Policy/VIMS/Law School and Reves Center study abroad program.

Comision Provincial por la Memoria

Location: La Plata, Argentina

Partner institution: Comision Provincial por la Memoria

William & Mary offers a sponsored semester program at the Comision Provincial por la Memoria National (CPM). Participants of this program take courses at the CPM and the University of La Plata and intern with the Comision Provincial por la Memoria, an Argentine human-rights NGO headed by Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel.

Aegis Trust (NGO), Rwanda

Location: Kigali, Rwanda

Agreement duration: 2019 to Present

Partner institution: Aegis Trust (NGO)

Created and conducted through W&M's School of Education, a three-week winter study abroad program was launched in 2019 in conjunction with partner institution Aegis Trust, an NGO from the United Kingdom based in Rwanda with the goal of preventing genocide, crimes against humanity, and mass atrocities worldwide.

This program focuses on the process of forgiveness and community building in the context of the Rwanda genocide and offers an opportunity for Ph.D., masters, and undergraduate students to study abroad together. Students will attend lectures by local experts, genocide survivors, government officials and peace educators. Other activities will include readings, research, tours of genocide memorials, engagement with those living in reconciliation villages, small group session, and optional meditation practice.

Exploring New Global Partnerships

W&M faculty and staff exploring international initiatives, including establishing a formal institutional relationship and collaboration with a university partner overseas, are encouraged to reach out to the Associate Provost for International Affairs, [[tvlong,Professor Teresa Longo]].

For technical and process questions related to international agreements, you may also contact the Reves Center’s [[globalpartnerships,Global Engagement Team (GET)]]. In accordance with university policies, all international MOUs and international agreements must be signed by the Associate Provost for International Affairs. 

Memoranda of Understanding

W&M-approved templates of memorandum of understanding (MOU) or international agreement can be provided upon request.

In accordance with university policies, all MOUs and international agreements must be signed by the Associate Provost for International Affairs. To ensure that international agreements adhere to campus, state, and federal regulations, GET staff work closely with the Office of University Counsel to review and approve of each MOU and agreement.

Renewal of International Agreements

If you are currently working with an international partner and the agreement or MOU needs to be renewed, please contact the [[globalpartnerships,Global Engagement Team]]. In accordance with university policies, all international MOUs and international agreements, including agreement renewals of existing partnerships, must be signed by the Associate Provost for International Affairs.
