Office of Research Compliance
Research compliance is an expansive set of responsibilities not just for the PI of a project, but for anyone participating in research. The Office of Research Compliance supports faculty, staff, technicians, Post Docs and students to ensure research at W&M is conducted with integrity, ethics and honesty, and in accordance with all applicable laws.
Research Committees
Some research conducted at William & Mary must be approved by one of the Research Committees listed below. These committees review protocols to ensure compliance with institutional, state and federal policies and regulations.

Animal Care & Use (IACUC)
The William & Mary Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees research protocols using live vertebrates to ensure their humane care and treatment.

Human Subjects Research (IRB)
The William & Mary Institutional Review Board (IRB) is an administrative body charged with overseeing protocols involving human participants.

Biosafety (IBC)
The William & Mary Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) regulates work with recombinant DNA technology set forth by the NIH and oversees broader biosafety issues.

Radiation Safety (RSC)
The William & Mary Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) provides oversight and support to faculty, staff and students at William & Mary to ensure the safe and appropriate use of radioactive materials.

Native American Graves & Repatriation
The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 and associated regulations govern the return of Native American remains, funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony to lineal descendants, culturally affiliated Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations.
Protocol Management
SPARCS is the protocol management system William & Mary uses to manage research and teaching protocols for review by the IRB, IACUC and IBC.
Required Training
Prior to initiating any research activity, all personnel must complete applicable training. Training requirements vary depending on research type and funding source.

Research Integrity & Conflicts of Interest
Researchers must adhere to standards of research integrity, including responsible conduct of research, and disclose financial interest or outside relationships that may constitute a conflict of interest.
