Documentation, Analysis and Translation of Language in Society

Rachel Varra directs William & Mary’s lab for the Documentation, Analysis and Translation of Language in Society (DATLaS) and collaborates with undergraduate students on a variety of projects. DATLaS projects examine language in its cultural, historical, and social context

The DATLaS mission is:

  1. To understand language processing in the human mind and the relationship between language, society, identity and cognition
  2. To document the lives and connections of individuals in their communities
  3. To engender understanding of the role and working of human language to support social justice
  4. To train students in research and develop concrete skills related to language research, which are transferable to other domains
  5. To encourage collaborative and meaningful reciprocity between William & Mary and its community
