Research Interests
Cristina Stancioiu received her PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles, and holds MAs in both Art History and Medieval Studies. Her teaching and research explore the visual and textual evidence from the Byzantine and Venetian Empires, the crusader states in the Latin East, and the Medieval West.
Dr. Stancioiu's extensive field research has been funded by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute, the American Philosophical Society, and the International Center of Medieval Art, among others. Her book, Portraiture in the Eastern Mediterranean, 13th-16th Centuries: Memory and Cultural Identity in a Post-Byzantine World, is under contract with Amsterdam University Press. A second book project, Art and Identity in Eastern Europe, 14th-17th Centuries: Wallachia and Moldavia in Context, studies issues of cultural identity through portraiture and dress. She currently holds a research fellowship with the Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Cologne, and will spend 2017-2018 in residence in Germany.
