What to Expect: First and Second-Year Courses

The following information provides a general overview of the workload and expectations for introductory biology coursework.

Reading Load and Required Texts

  • Reading Materials: Students will primarily read from a standard biology textbook supplemented by scientific papers.

  • Weekly Volume: You should expect two to three reading assignments per week.

 Assignment and Examination Formats

Biology courses at William & Mary utilize a variety of assessment methods to ensure a deep understanding of the material:

  • In-Class Work: Regular exercises and group activities.

  • Written Work: Formal writing assignments throughout the semester.

  • Testing: Quizzes and exams consisting of a mix of multiple-choice and free-response answers.

Course Materials and Fees

Students will not need to purchase additional course materials beyond the required textbooks and lab manuals.

Testing Philosophy: Applying Knowledge

A key component of the W&M Biology curriculum is the move from rote memorization to critical application.
