Center for Archaeological Research

Archaeologists excavate cast iron pieces of an oven from a Civil War camp site that lay beneath a parking lot at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Gloucester Point, VirginiaThe William & Mary Center for Archaeological Research was established in May 1988 to provide cultural resource management, consulting and research services, and applied educational opportunities. Currently, the Center provides two semester-long graduate student internships and serves as a resource for student engagement with experienced cultural resource management professionals and research data. Over the course of 36 years, the Center has received more than 1,300 grants and contracts for applied research in archaeology, architectural history, archival research, and collections management. Our staff typically includes 8 to 12 full-time professionals along with several part-time employees. Center projects have contributed to a wide range of research topics encompassing virtually all time periods of the human experience in Virginia and surrounding states.
