Student Insurance Enrollment Information

General Information

The annual master policy becomes effective on August 1 and terminates on July 31 but students are billed in two installments for the Fall and Spring/Summer coverage separately. The Fall coverage period begins on 8/1 and ends on 12/31 and the Spring/Summer coverage begins on 1/1 and ends on 7/31. These coverage dates and premium rates are set by the school in accordance with the contract and cannot be changed or prorated further. This policy is a Non-Renewable One-Year Term Policy.

Students may elect to enroll in the student health insurance anytime during a coverage period (up to 31 days before the last day of class for that academic term) but the rates are not pro-rated further. Students must meet the Eligibility requirements each time you pay a premium to continue your insurance coverage (see Insurance Eligibility on the Student Insurance page). Refunds of premiums are allowed only upon entry into the armed forces. The Enrollment FAQ's may answer any questions you have regarding the insurance enrollment process.

Important Note:
  • It is the student's responsibility to verify that your Student Account has been billed appropriately for the Health Insurance Policy charge each semester and to submit the online Opt-In Enrollment form each semester to activate your coverage with the insurance company.
  • If you do not see the Health Insurance Policy charge on your Student Account, please contact the [[student.insurance, Student Insurance Coordinator]] at the university immediately.

Summer Term

Students who enrolled in the Student Insurance Plan for the Academic year are covered from August 1 to July 31 (the entire policy year) so it isn't necessary for you to Opt-In or enroll for the Summer coverage. Students whose academic program begins in the Summer term and who wish to enroll in the school-sponsored Student Insurance Plan and have the cost billed to your W&M Student Account must submit the Student Insurance Special Enrollment Request form to authorize the school to process your insurance enrollment outside the open enrollment periods for the Academic year. It is not mandatory and you are not required to submit a Waiver Request as proof of other adequate healthcare coverage during the Summer term.

Any full-time undergraduate or graduate students or F-1/J-1 student who waived coverage for the Fall and Spring terms and now wishes to enroll in the Summer coverage period may do so by submitting the Student Insurance Special Enrollment Request Form to authorize the school to process your enrollment and bill the student premium to your W&M Student Account outside the open enrollment periods for the Academic year. You may be required to furnish proof of a qualifying life event and verify your insurance eligibility for the Summer coverage period.

Dependents

Students who enroll in this plan may insure their dependents. Eligible dependents are the student's spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 26 years of age. Insured students who wish to enroll their eligible dependents must purchase dependent coverage directly with UnitedHealthcare StudentResources online through UHCSR's online services, My Account using the Enroll Dependent button found on the My Account Home page (lower left-hand column.)

Continuation

Insured students who have graduated, withdrawn or changed from full to part-time status AND have been continuously insured under W&M's policy for at least 3 consecutive months are eligible to continue their coverage for a period of not more than 180 days/6 months under the school's policy in effect at the time of the Continuation. Insured students whose student status has changed must apply for the Continuation coverage within 31 days of the termination of your current student coverage and must enroll directly with UnitedHealthcare StudentResources by logging into your UHCSR MyAccount and using the link found in the MyCoverage page. (Note: link will NOT be available until 1 month before coverage period expiration date and will be removed 1 month after the coverage period expiration date (Fall expires 7/31 and Spring expires 12/31.)

Unfortunately, it is not possible to enroll in the W&M policy for the first time under the Continuation coverage; you MUST have been continuously insured under either the Fall or Spring/Summer coverage periods to be eligible.
