Our mission at William & Mary is to help every student fulfill his or her greatest academic potential. The last thing we want is for funding issues to get in the way. We do our best to make it easy for both undergraduate and graduate students to apply for and receive the funds they need to conduct groundbreaking research and scholarship in every academic area.
Undergraduate Research Funding
For undergraduates, you can work side by side with professors on their leading-edge research or design and conduct your own project through an Honors Program or by taking an Independent Study course — regardless of your chosen path, you'll find support along the way.
We also offer dozens of summer research fellowships that pay for equipment, travel and living expenses to conduct independent research at home or abroad. The Honors Fellowship awards up to $5,000 for summer research leading to a departmental honors thesis and additional summer research grants fund projects in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Monroe Scholars and 1693 Scholars also have the chance to conduct fully-funded summer research right after their freshman year, and then again after an upperclass year of their choosing.
Graduate Research Funding
For graduate students, Sponsored Programs helps connect advanced researchers with generous outside funding opportunities in the sciences and humanities. In Arts & Sciences, students are offered fellowships and grants through the Office of Graduate Studies & Research.
