Patron Service Assistant
Patron Service Assistants (PSA's) are responsible for providing effective and courteous customer service and equipment rental services to patrons of the Bee McLeod Recreation Center. More specifically, Patron Service Assistants are responsible for all of the duties involved with daily operations for the Front Desk and Equipment Center.
These duties include, but are not limited to, being knowledgeable of department programs, activities, and policies; handling monetary transactions; registering patrons for various programs and activities; equipment check-out; maintaining patron safety and rapport; and upholding a level of professionalism required of all Campus Recreation employees.
PSA's will work in conjunction with Facility Supervisors, the Equipment Center Manager, the Student Development Graduate Assistant, the Student Development Assistant Director, other Campus Recreation Center Staff and each other in fulfilling these duties.
Job Expectations:
- Be knowledgeable of department programs, activities, and policies as well as facility issues and announcements.
- Attend mandatory weekly staff meetings and bi-annual trainings.
- Communicate with co-workers and supervisors in a timely and appropriate manner. This includes providing and updating contact information as needed.
- Ensuring that shift responsibilities are completed. This includes finding a qualified substitute to cover shifts that cannot be worked.
- Greet patrons as they enter the Rec Center and swipe their W&M ID cards.
- Answer the front desk telephone.
- Sell membership cards, FitWell passes, locker rentals, and guest passes.
- Sign patrons up for Intramural Sports.
- Clean the cardiovascular and weight machines
- Equipment checkout and sales.
- All PSA's are required to participate in review sessions throughout the year, as well as obtain and maintain current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
- Perform other duties as requested.

Outdoor Recreation Assistant
Outdoor Recreation Assistants are responsible for providing safe, fun and educational climbing opportunities and equipment rental services to members of the W&M Community. More specifically, Outdoor Recreation Assistants are responsible for all of the duties involved with daily climbing wall operations, special climbing wall operations, and outdoor equipment rental and repair.
These duties include, but are not limited to, opening and closing the Climbing Wall and Equipment Center, checking-in climbers, inspecting climbers and equipment, route setting, providing participants with necessary information and skills, completing required paperwork, meeting professional standards in various skill areas, maintaining participant safety and rapport, and upholding a level of professionalism required of all Recreational Sports employees.
ORAs will work in conjunction with the Outdoor Recreation Managers responsible for the Climbing Wall and Equipment Center, the Outdoor Recreation Graduate Assistant, the Outdoor Recreation Assistant Director, other Student Recreation Center Staff and each other in fulfilling these duties.

Facility Operations
Job Description
The grease that helps the facility run smoothly. Facility Operation (FO) staff will assist the Equipment Manager in all facets of maintaining a safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing facility that provides quality opportunities for sport, recreation, and leisure activities for patrons. More specifically, Facility Operation employees will provide exceptional customer service to participants by maintaining all open recreation area,s including the gymnasium, multi-activity court, fitness studios, racquetball courts, and all outdoor facilities. In addition, they will also perform routine preventive maintenance on all fitness equipment determined by checklists or assigned by the Equipment Manager. Furthermore, FOs will provide support to each program area, which includes: Intramurals, Sport Clubs, Aquatics, Fitness & Wellness, and Outdoor Recreation.
Job Expectations

- Adhere to emergency policies and procedures as established by Campus Recreation.
- Become familiar with all aspects of the facility; the location and operation of all alarms, pull stations AEDs, extinguishers as well as telephones.
- Reinforce departmental policies and procedures to ensure safety of participants.
- Operate power tools, hand tools, and automated systems.
- Perform maintenance and repairs throughout the facility.
- Initiates work-order requests and make recommendations for facility improvements
- Maintain workshop inventory
- Coordinate with the Equipment Manager for the purchase of maintenance supplies.
- Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly inspections on all fitness equipment.
- Assist with the coordination and set-up of special events.
- Perform thorough cleaning and sanitizing of cardio and strength equipment.
- Perform routine inspection on all Campus Recreation vehicles.
- Required to attend monthly Facility Operation staff meetings and other meetings as directed by the Equipment Manager.

- Maintain Cleaning documents, including inventory of supplies
- Inspect Cardio and Strength equipment for safety and Maintenance issues
- Perform any other duties as required by Campus Recreation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current W&M enrolled student
- Positive attitude and a desire to assist patrons
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to self-motivate with little or no supervision
Time Commitment
- Average 8-10 hours/week
- Attend and actively participate in bi-weekly FO meetings
- Attend and actively participate in departmental student staff training
Special Certifications/Requirements
- Attain CPR/First Aid/AED, and BBP Certification (must be obtained within 30 days of hire)
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Successful completion of Vehicle Safety Course

Facility Supervisor
Facility Supervisors (FSs) are responsible for the overall supervision of the Bee McLeod Recreation Center. More specifically, Facility Supervisors are responsible for all of the duties involved with daily operations of the facility, supervising other Campus Recreation personnel and Rec Center programs, and enforcing Campus Recreation Department rules and regulations.
These duties include, but are not limited to, opening and closing the Rec Center; being knowledgeable of department programs, activities, and policies; appropriately handling patron disputes and complaints; emergency management; maintaining patron and employee safety and rapport; and upholding a level of professionalism required of all Campus Recreation employees.
FSs will work in conjunction with the Student Development Graduate Assistant, the Student Development Assistant Director, other Campus Recreation staff and each other in fulfilling these duties.
Job Expectations:
- Operate the facility under the prescribed operating procedures.
- Ensure that the facility is opened and closed at the scheduled times.
- See that all personnel are present and at their assigned areas when they are scheduled to work. If not, the FS is responsible for finding a replacement for that shift. The FS will communicate any absences or lateness with the Assistant Director.
- Upon arrival, 15 minutes prior to your shift, review the Daily Report, specifically the “Today” sheet, check all activity areas to ensure that they are unlocked and lighted. Check all unattended exit doors to see that they are locked.
- Adhere to the dress code in the FS manual.
- Adhere to emergency procedures as established by the Campus Recreation Department, and complete accurate injury reports. Any incident that involves a serious injury, a criminal act, or general misconduct should be reported to Campus Police immediately. The emergency # is 911. The facility supervisor should notify the professional staff if 911 is called.
- Be familiar with all aspects of the building; the location and operation of all alarms, pull stations, AEDs, and fire extinguishers as well as telephones. Please note on the FS report any equipment that is not working. There is a campus phone located in the gym at the front desk- NO personal calls from desk phones!
- Be familiar with all aspects of Campus Recreation programs so that you can answer questions, handle problems, and reply to inquiries from participants.
- Make rounds of the building looking for facility problems, safety hazards or improper departmental operations. Remember to check the swimming pool as well as the outside pool door and storage doors. Take participation counts in each area and record on the facility form.
- You are responsible for the keys to all doors in the Rec Center.
- See that all rules and regulations are being followed by participants and personnel.
- Assist as needed with the Intramurals, Sport Clubs, and Recreational activities (set-up, supervision, take down).
- If other employees need a short break, please assist them with their job responsibilities.
- Fill out a Facility Supervisor Report. Indicate to the professional staff any and all malfunctions and abnormalities of the departments’ operation.
- Examine the condition of the Free Weight Room. Ensure that the weights, bars, dumbbells and the free weight accessories are properly racked. Encourage individuals that are lifting to assist you with ensuring that the room is safe. Ensure that patrons who are lifting are being spotted when necessary.
- Attend all FS meetings as scheduled.
- At the end of your shift, relay any messages, problems, etc. to the next FS.
- If you are working the first shift, you will open the facility. See the FS opening checklist for specific details and procedures.
- If you are working the last shift, you will close the facility. See the FS closing checklist for specific details and procedures.
- Employees working at the close of the day are to remain on duty until the facility is completely closed. To ensure everyone’s safety, the PSA and FS should leave the building together after closing. The FS is responsible for making sure all employees have a safe way home.
- At assigned times, clean and maintain the cardiovascular equipment.
- All FS employees will be required to participate in review sessions throughout the year, as well as keep CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications valid. If anything out of the ordinary occurs during your shift, please do not hesitate to contact a professional staff member as soon as possible.
- Perform any other duties as required by the Campus Recreation Department.

Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, or Water Safety Instructor
- The lifeguard is responsible for the safety of all swimmers and for the enforcement of all pool rules and regulations.
- All lifeguards will be required to participate in review sessions throughout the year, as well as keep CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard Certifications valid.
Specific Duties:
- Prevent accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, regulations and ordinances governing the conduct of persons using the swimming pool.
- Perform a safe rescue for a swimmer in trouble and administer the necessary First Aid.
- Maintain the pool deck and keep gutters clean.
- Maintain order in the pool, and as far as possible, foresee possible trouble and take steps to prevent it.
- Report definite or potential physical hazards and unsafe conditions to the Asst. Director.
- Test the water at the beginning of each shift and record on the proper form.
- Open and close the pool at the scheduled times.
- At the end of the shift, clear the pool of swimmers and pick up around the deck area. Put buoys, kickboards, and inner tubes in their proper places and throw trash away. Lock all doors.

Intramural Officials

Intramural Supervisors
The purpose of the Intramural Sports program is to provide structured, competitive leagues and tournaments in a variety of sports and activities offered throughout the school year. Intramural Sports Supervisors are responsible for staffing team sports including Indoor Soccer, Softball, Flag Football, Floor Hockey, 5x5 Basketball, Outdoor Soccer and Volleyball as well as several weekend tournaments and special events. Supervisors must be able to enforce playing rules and implement Intramural Sports policies to ensure fairness and safety in intramural contests.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of the intramural sports program. He/she is responsible for game/match administration, individual/dual meets and tournaments, student officials (including training and evaluation), and enforcing all rules and policies established for IM participants by the Campus Recreation Department. Additionally, supervisors are responsible for acting as a liaison between the officials/participants and the Graduate Assistant of Intramurals and the Assistant Director of Intramurals.
While on duty, the supervisor is the representative of the professional staff and the university. He/she shall take control in all emergency situations, deal with injuries, be accountable for set-up and storage of equipment, settle disputes, answer inquiries and evaluate the job performance of student officials. Common sense, communication, and visibility are keys to being an effective and efficient supervisor.
Supervisors are expected to work an average of 10 hours a week (this will vary from week to week). There are also shifts on weekends and supervisors are expected to take some of those as well (as their schedule permits, but approximately 7 weekends per semester). The numbers are not hard and fast; they vary among supervisors and based on what sports are being run at the time. All supervisors should attend all supervisor meetings, officials’ training sessions and officials’ meetings, as well as captains’ meetings where his/her schedule permits.
Required Experience: Applicants must have worked as an Intramural Official for at least one semester at the university to apply.
Preferred Experience: Supervisory experience and officiating background (or interest) in a number of sports preferred.
Period of Employment: Employment as an Intramural Sports Official is seasonal and based on the schedule of team sports.
Compensation and Hours: Pay range – $12.41 per hour for new supervisors with a $.25 raise for successive years worked.
Hours are self-selected and flexible, approximately 10 hours per week.
