Student Employment
Student Unions & Engagement provides on-campus job opportunities that allow students to develop professional, interpersonal, and technical skills. By training our employees to provide excellent service to the students, staff, and visitors to the university, we promote leadership and prepare our student employees for successful lives after graduation. We employ approximately 70 students in various positions to provide information, leisure opportunities, and event support for the campus community. Requirements
- Full-time undergraduate, graduate, or law school students at William & Mary
- Good academic standing with the university and must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater during the term of their employment
- Attend and fully participate in biannual training. Training typically takes place one week before classes begin in August and several days before classes begin in January. Absence from training may be grounds for immediate dismissal.
- Attend regularly scheduled meetings
Expectations
- This is a professional work experience. Students and staff will conduct themselves accordingly.
- Provide friendly and helpful service that reflects positively on Student Unions & Engagement and William & Mary.
- Report to assigned shifts on time. Staff are responsible for finding coverage if they are unable to attend an assigned shift.
- Wear uniform while on duty.
Each area has additional specific expectations that will be communicated below and upon hiring.
Position Descriptions
A/V TechnicianA/V Technicians serve as technical assistants for events across campus. Techs set up and run lighting and sound equipment for larger events, and assist with event logistics and facility management at Briggs Amphitheatre. Prior experience is not required, but can be beneficial. A valid driver's license with 2+ years of driving experience is required.

Building ManagerBuilding Managers oversee daily building operations in the Sadler Center and Daily Grind, including opening and closing of the buildings, staffing the Sadler Information Desk, assisting with A/V and furniture set-ups for events held in the buildings. Prior work experience with Student Unions & Engagement is preferred. Ability to life 25lbs repeatedly and 10lbs overhead is required.

Event AssistantEvent Assistants work as a team in conjunction with the Building Managers to ensure events run smoothly. They are responsible for set-up and tear-down, as well as serve as technical assistants for events occurring in the Sadler Center and Daily Grind. Prior experience is not required, but can be beneficial.

Union Central Desk AttendantUnion Central Desk Attendants check out and maintain equipment in the games area on the first floor of Sadler. They also assist in planning and staffing gaming tournaments, such as pool tournaments and weekly Thursday Night Trivia.

Area SupervisorArea Supervisors are student supervisors within each functional area listed above. They manage the student-staff within their area under the guidance of a professional staff member. Area Supervisors are hired for one-year terms but have the option to reapply for the following year. This position is open to internal candidates only.

Selection Process
Student-staff selection is a two-part process comprised of an application and interview.
- Applications open in March for the upcoming academic year. We review each application thoroughly to determine eligibility, employment preference, work history and previous experience, and compatibility with SUE's employment program goals.
- Interview with an SUE staff member. Based on applications, we will select individuals to attend an interview with an SUE professional and/or student-staff member. This allows us to become better acquainted with the applicants and make final employment decisions.
