Human Rights Summer Intern Fellowship in La Plata, Argentina

Description: The program offers undergraduate students fellowship awards that enable them to travel to Argentina and spend six weeks engaged in hands-on work with Argentina’s Comisión Provincial por la Memoria (CPM- Memory Commission), staff addressing human rights issues, past and present. Students live with host families, select the area of work in which they wish to participate, and dive into that work in collaboration with CPM staff.

Anticipated Internship Options:

  • Criminal Justice. Internship entails work with CPM's Committee against Torture: composed of lawyers and criminal justice experts, the committee's work entails monitoring incarceration and detention sites, interviewing and representing detainees, preparing reports.
  • History and Memory in the Argentine Landscape. Internship entails work with CPM Research and Sites of Memory Group: site-related research, public history educational activities, program development related to sites, engagement with sites of memory networks.
  • Communication and Promotion. Internship entails work with CPM's Press and Communication's team composed primarily of journalists: assist with creation of news content and translate to English; participate in event organization; design publications related to Human Rights and Memory.
  • Archival Preservation. Internship entails work with archivists to maintain and disseminate documents in declassified intelligence archive covering period of dictatorships; assisting with requests for information from victims, relatives, and scholars; translating materials for dissemination.

Freeman Intern Fellowships in East Asia

A generous grant from the Freeman Foundation has made it possible for up to 24 William & Mary undergraduates to conduct unpaid internships in Asia since the summer of 2018.  The purpose of this program is to provide students with a range of professional opportunities in structured, real-world settings that will allow them to clarify their career goals, enhance their career preparation, and develop their cultural competencies. Credit Bearing Internship Opportunities While Studying Abroad

Some study abroad programs offer part-time internships during a semester or summer.  These internships are typically imbedded into the curriculum of a seminar class and have an academic component for which credit will be awarded with faculty appoval. Often the study abroad provider can offer a wide range of internship placements depending on interest.  Some internship options may require an additional fee.

NON-Credit Bearing Internship Opportunities 

The Cohen Career Center is responsible for advising and providing information about non-credit bearing international internships and employment to undergraduate students. For more information on these topics, students should call 221-3231 to make an appointment  with the appropriate Career Advisor.  These internships are NOT study abroad and students do not need to register with the Global Education Office to participate.
